Bird Records for Zeek's Marsh at Beaver Creek, Lincoln County, Oregon

6 October 2001 Epilogue by Range Bayer to Original Report

The following report was provided to Jackie Niemi to assist in her efforts along with those of her husband Michael Davis and others to protect Beaver Creek Marsh. This report provided many records of birds present in the Marsh, and thereby showed that the Marsh was important habitat.

Their effort was successful. 78 acres of Beaver Creek Marsh adjacent to Ona Beach State Park were purchased with private funding by the Wetlands Conservancy and dedicated as the "Estella Matilda Happ Memorial Wetland" of Beaver Creek Marsh in May 1997 (Anonymous. 1997. Beaver Creek Marsh Dedication Sunday. P. A8 in May 14 News-Times [Newport, Oregon] newspaper).

Niemi and Davis received the National Wetlands Conservancy award for 1997 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for their efforts (L. O'Donnell. 1997. Beaver Creek Residents Jackie Niemi and Michael Davis Receive National Wetlands Conservancy Award for Preserving Marsh. P. A8 in May 14 News-Times [Newport, Oregon] newspaper).

The records below are for what Laimons Osis' called Zeek's Marsh, after the man who owned the area. Range does not know how much of Zeek's Marsh is within the Happ Memorial Wetland.

In hindsight, I wish I would have listed the records for each bird species vertically (rather than horizontally) in tables of Laimons' census data. Then seasonal trends for each species can be more easily seen, and data could also be incorporated into a spreadsheet as an ASCII file.

A Report Given to Jackie Niemi for the Beaver Creek Marsh Acquisition,

1 July 1994

PURPOSE.--This report lists bird records made specifically at the Zeek's Marsh Study Area shown in Fig. 1.

INTRODUCTION.--These records are compiled from over 125 observations made during 1973-1986 by Laimons Osis (Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, 2040 SE Marine Science Drive, Newport, OR 97365). Laimons made these observations for his own interest and not as part of his ODFW employment. He is also looking for additional notebooks (e.g., 1981) that may contain more records.

Two records made in the Zeek's Marsh Study Area (Fig. 1) in 1993-1994 by other observers are also given in Table 3.

RECENT CHANGES IN ZEEK'S MARSH.--This Marsh has changed in character in the past 20 years. When Laimons started his observations, the portion of the Marsh south of the roadway (see Fig. 1) was used for grazing by horses. I do not know when this grazing stopped, but currently the Marsh appears abandoned for agricultural purposes, probably because it is much wetter than it once was, and marsh vegetation and red alders have greatly expanded in extent.

Another change is that the portion of the Marsh north of the roadway (see Fig. 1) used to only be seasonally flooded, but in recent years, it appears to be consistently wetter than it used to be.

The changes in birdlife that have resulted from these changes in Zeek's Marsh is unknown.

METHODS.--Laimons did not just observe Zeek's Marsh--he usually had a route for observing birds at Seal Rocks, Ona Beach State Park, and the Beaver Creek Valley. However, the only records that have been compiled are those included in this report for Zeek's Marsh. A complete survey took about 60 min or so, and he probably spent about 5-20 min observing birds at Zeek's Marsh. If known, the time when he started his whole survey (not just his Zeek's Marsh observations) is given for each observation in Table 2. Observations when no waterbirds were recorded are included in Table 2 because documenting the absence of birds is important in determining bird usage of an area.

Other bird species other than those given in Table 1 may have occurred at Zeek's Marsh. For example, Laimons was not familiar with the calls of Virginia Rails, Soras, and American Bitterns, so he may have missed these marsh birds.

RESULTS.--A total of 76 bird taxa has been recorded at Zeek's Marsh (Table 1). Many of these are waterbirds, but there were also quite a variety of terrestrial birds (Table 1).

Laimons' observations were most systematic for waterbirds because they were more conspicuous and easier to count accurately. Accordingly, 125 systematic waterbird observations are given in Table 2; Table 3 includes several more incidental observations of waterbirds and all observations of terrestrial birds, many of which were during the same observations given in Table 2.

OTHER BIRD RECORDS FOR BEAVER CREEK.--Besides Laimons' uncompiled records for other sites at Beaver Creek, I also have some incidental records made for "Beaver Creek" that are not specific to a particular site. Roy Lowe of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has also conducted some waterfowl censuses at Beaver Creek.

FIGURE 1. Laimons Osis' Study Area (dotted) for Zeek's Marsh. Parts of this Study Area may have been obscured by seasonal growth of marsh vegetation during Osis' observations. Most of the Study Area is in Township 12S, Range 11W, NE 1/4 of Section 19.

TABLE 2. Systematic observations of waterbirds at the Zeek's Marsh Study
Area (see Fig. 1) by Laimons Osis. Observations were made from the roadway
in Fig. 1, and the amount of area observed varied seasonally and yearly
depending upon the growth and decline of marsh vegetation. Incidental
waterbird records are in Table 3.
Osis was not familiar with the calls of Virginia Rails, Soras, or
American Bitterns, so these taxa may have been present but missed.
The bird records in this Table and mentions of flooding specifically
at Zeek's Marsh have been double-checkED against Osis' original field
notes.
Time=time after which observations began; time is in Pacific Standard
Time (PST) by the 24 hour clock (i.e., add 1200 to times beginning with
1 PM; e.g., 2 PM=1400). During a complete survey, Osis often made
observations at Seal Rocks, Ona Beach State Park, and at several sites in
the Beaver Creek Valley; such a complete survey took an estimated
45-90 min, with duration increasing as the number of waterbirds increased.
On other days, he sometimes only surveyed 1-3 sites. The time he gave
(and which is listed in this Table) was at the start of his observations
and not the time when he started his observations at Zeek's Marsh.

     Flooding codes for Zeek's Marsh:
?=flooding condition unknown
Fl=at least partially flooded
FL?=other portions of the Beaver Creek Valley were flooded, so flooding
probably occurred here, although flooding at this site was not
     specifically recorded.

     Other codes:
 .=taxon not recorded
+=at least the indicated number of birds were seen
 @=estimated number of birds
F=female or immature male in female-type plumage.
M=identifiable as a male. (In a sequence, the number of birds was given
first, then gender; for example, 3M5F=3 males and 5 females.)
X=taxon present but the number was not recorded

TABLE 3. Incidental observations of terrestrial and waterbirds at the
Zeek's Marsh Study Area (see Fig. 1). All observations prior to 1993 were
by Laimons Osis; sources of 1993-1994 records are given in parentheses with
the date of observation. Osis' observations were made from the roadway in
Fig. 1, and the amount of area observed varied seasonally and yearly
depending upon the growth and decline of marsh vegetation. Observations of
terrestrial birds were classed as incidental because Osis' methods were not
designed to be systematic for them. These observations are considered
incidental for waterbirds because these observations were not conducted as
systematically as those in Table 2.
Osis was not familiar with the calls of Virginia Rails, Soras, or
American Bitterns, so these taxa may have been present but missed.
The bird records in this Table have been double-checkED against Osis'
original field notes.
